Is this the right printer for you?

Who the KIP 79 Series is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a high-volume AEC firm, repro shop, or city plan-room printing 500-1,500 D-size sheets a day and need 14 D ppm / 840 per hour throughput.
  • You want a single chassis with three configurations: KIP 7974 print-only, KIP 7984 with CIS scanner, or KIP 7994 with the production-grade CCD scanner.
  • You handle 4 active rolls of media (mix of bond, vellum, film) and want auto switching to keep large set runs going without operator intervention.
  • You can dedicate 220-240V 15A on a NEMA 6-20R outlet plus roughly 6 x 7 ft of floor space.
  • You need top-grade scan productivity — the optional KIP 2300 CCD scanner runs 12 ips B&W / 6 ips color with dual-feed tables, faster than CIS scanners.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You're between 79 Series and 75 Series — the 79 prints 14 D ppm vs 10 D for the 75; if you're producing 600+ sheets per hour the upcharge is worth it.
  • You start with the CIS 7984 and want to upgrade to the CCD 7994 later — KIP supports field swap of the scanner head.
  • You need rear stacking (required for the 7994 CCD MFP unless using a dual-footprint scanner stand) — plan for the additional rear depth at install.
  • You scan thick originals up to 1.6 mm — the engine accepts them but image quality is only guaranteed under 0.25 mm.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need color output — this is a mono LED engine. Look at the KIP 800 (10 D ppm color) or 900 Series (16 D ppm color) instead.
  • You print under 200 D-size sheets a day — you're paying for a 14 ppm production engine and using a tenth of it. Drop to the 71 or 75 Series.
  • You only have 120V power — the 79 Series runs on dedicated 220-240V 15A, NEMA 6-20R only.
  • You don't have 6 x 7 ft of floor space — the 79 Series MFP is 67 x 33 in and weighs 915 lb (printer 860 lb), this is not a desktop or roll-cart unit.
  • You need wireless or AirPrint — the 79 Series is wired Ethernet plus USB only, no Wi-Fi.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The KIP 79 Series is the top of KIP's monochrome wide-format lineup — a 36-inch LED-array system built for high-volume AEC firms, repro shops, and city plan-rooms producing 500-1,500 D-size sheets a day. It runs at 14 D-size pages per minute (840 per hour) at 600 x 2400 dpi, with a standard 4-roll media deck and three configurations on the same chassis: KIP 7974 print-only, KIP 7984 MFP with embedded CIS color scanner, and KIP 7994 MFP with the KIP 2300 CCD production scanner (12 ips B&W / 6 ips color, dual-feed, 0.6" thickness detection). The KIP System K touchscreen handles print, copy, and scan with cloud connect to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, SharePoint, plus FTP/SMB/USB destinations. Footprint is 67 x 33 x 59 inches and the unit weighs 860 lb (printer) or 915 lb (MFP) on dedicated 220-240V 15A power — plan a NEMA 6-20R drop and double-check rear clearance if you order rear stacking, which is required for the 7994 unless you spec the dual-footprint scanner stand. The thing buyers regret: ordering the CIS 7984 then realizing they needed CCD scanning for thicker originals or higher productivity. If you scan more than 30 originals a day, spec the 7994 from day one.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging KIP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We use the KIP 79 in our architecture firm for large format printing and it handles 36-inch rolls without any jamming issues. The speed is solid and color accuracy is reliable for client presentations."
  • "Upgraded from an older KIP model and the difference in workflow is noticeable. The touchscreen interface is intuitive and toner cartridge replacement is straightforward. Been running it for 8 months without major issues."
  • "The KIP 79 prints fast and the output quality is consistent, but the monthly supply costs add up. Definitely a workhorse for our print shop, just need to budget accordingly."
