Is this the right printer for you?

Who the KIP 850 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a small architecture, engineering, or design shop and need in-house color plotting — site plans, presentation boards, renderings.
  • You print 1,500–6,000 D-size pages a month — mostly B&W with regular color jobs.
  • You want one machine that handles both mono drawings and color renderings without swapping rolls.
  • You have wall space against a flat 60-inch chassis and want front stacking to keep the footprint tight.
  • You already use KIP System K software or want to standardize a small fleet on KIP's 12" touchscreen workflow.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You need a scanner — the 850 is print-only. Add the KIP 720 CIS scanner kit, or step up to the 870 (multifunction).
  • You print over 6,000 D-size pages a month — the machine handles it, but the 870/880 throughput per square foot is more economical.
  • You want Wi-Fi — wireless is an optional adapter, not standard.
  • You're new to LED-array color toner — color is consistent but expect a 2–3 week ramp on calibration and media profiles.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You only print B&W — the mono KIP 7170 is the right call; you're paying for color toner you'll never use.
  • You need 14 D-size ppm production speed — this is 10 ppm B&W. Look at the KIP 79 series.
  • You need 4-roll capacity — the 850 is 2-roll only. Step up to the 880 or 890.
  • You need scan-to-network and full MFP workflow — get the 870 (with scanner) instead.
  • You don't have a KIP-authorized service contract — KIP toner and parts are dealer-channel, not retail.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The KIP 850 is a color wide-format print system for design firms, A&E shops, and reprographics teams of 5–25. It runs at 10 D-size ppm B&W / 8 D-size ppm color at 600 x 2400 dpi, with 2 rolls (500 ft each, 11–36" widths) and a 12 inches touchscreen running KIP System K. The 850 is the entry point in KIP's 800 color series — same engine as the 870/880/890 (10 ppm B&W, 8 ppm color, 600 x 2400 dpi LED array), but print-only and 2-roll. It's what A&E shops buy when they want in-house color plots without paying for a scanner they won't use. The thing buyers regret: you bought a print-only model and later wanted scan/copy — step up to the KIP 870 or 880. On the KIP 800 color series, that's the trade you size around.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging KIP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We use this for our architecture firm and it handles large format prints without any issues. The speed is solid and color accuracy has been reliable for client presentations."
  • "Good workhorse for our print shop. Occasional paper jams but nothing worse than other machines we've had. Maintenance seems straightforward enough."
  • "Replaced an older model and the difference in throughput is noticeable. Setup took a while but once it was dialed in, it's been dependable for our document production needs."

These high-yield cartridges are designed for continuous print runs, reducing the frequency of replacements. Replacement toner uses the KIP 800 Series (KT-800) cartridges. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The KIP 850 is a color wide-format print system with a speed of 10 D-size ppm in black and white and 8 D-size ppm in color, while the KIP 71 Series is a monochrome wide-format MFP with speeds of 4 or 6 D-size ppm.
